In 1972 a group of 20 people in Ipar Euskal Herria, the French Basque Country, set up the publisher ELKAR in Baiona (Bayonne).
Two years later they were joined by a further 20 people in Hego Euskal Herria, the Spanish Basque Country. This was the beginning of the publisher Elkar.
In 1977 the publisher Elkar opened its second site, Donostia, and this soon became its headquarters, as the publisher’s core business was run from there. It is still the headquarters today.
However, Elkar has not been the group's only publisher.
Over time other publishers have joined it; in some cases because their founders decided to give up the business or retire, and in others because the difficult economic situation in the publishing industry led them to seek the support of a bigger publishing group.
One way or another, publishers like Sua, Ttarttalo o Txertoa have taken the step of joining elkar Taldea. Today all of them, together with the publisher and record label Elkar, are brands within a single company, grouped together under Elkar Argitaletxeak S.L.
